Hush Puppy

Hush Puppy
There may be a very good reason how hush puppies got their name. I found several versions. The stories that stand out involve hunters, fishermen or civil war soldiers.
1.       During hunting or fishermen cookouts they would throw hush puppies to the dogs and say... Hush Puppy. The fried corn muffins would quiet their dogs.
2.       During the civil war legend has it this way. Hush puppies would be thrown at the Confederate dogs to distract and hush them.
Many claims have been made. I love all the folklore. Both of these stories are probable.
I guess the battle is over who named them first. That’s not important to me. What’s important to me? Are they good? The answer is YES!
Hush puppies have strong ties to the South. Corn is a cornerstone and a foundation to the Southern cuisine. The south alone can’t take all the credit. The South should give praise to the Native Americans. They may have got this whole ball started.
Corn is very versatile. Some say too versatile, but that’s another subject/blog.
